James and John (the sons of Zebedee, but Jesus nicknamed them "Sons of Thunder"),
I have always loved this verse. At first I loved it because it gave me a picture of James and John as these loud, boisterous fisherman with booming voices and thunderous laughs. I love how it expresses the humanity of Jesus...that He actually gave people nicknames. It reminded me of my 4 sons and how thunderous they are!
But more recently, I have come across so many scriptures describing God's voice as thunder.
The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. Psalm 29:3 NLT
Listen carefully to the thunder of God's voice as it rolls from His mouth. It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction. Then comes the roaring of the thunder - the tremendous voice of His majesty. He does not restrain it when He speaks. God's voice is glorious in the thunder. We can't even imagine the greatness of His power. Job 37:2-5 NLT
When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him. John 12:29 NLT
The Lord's voice will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem, and the heavens and earth will shake. But the Lord will be a refuge for His people, a strong fortress for the people of Israel. Joel 3:16 NLT
These are just a handful. There are more. These scriptures led me think about my husband and how he loves a good, throaty, thunderous exhaust on a car. He just loves that sound. He loves the power behind it, how you can feel it. And then I understand. God designed him at the very depths of his being to love the sound of thunder, because that is the sound of his Father’s voice. He was made to love and hunger for the voice of God! Isn’t that beautiful?
I praise you for Your voice like thunder! May Your thunderous voice fill the mouths of Your sons! They will speak only what You are speaking, because they are men after Your own heart. Thank You for making them lovers of Your voice. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
